In SAP, a considerable number of forms are usually required for outgoing business documents such as purchase orders or invoices. The creation of a form, including a “form creation process,” consists of several stages:

- Data retrieval via a print program
- The form itself
- Output control

SAP provides a wide range of standard forms including the corresponding print programs. Typically, these print programs and forms can be adapted to the specific needs of the company. However, there may still be a need to create custom print programs and forms. SAP offers the following form technologies for this purpose:

SAPscript was the first form technology available in SAP R/3. This technology is still in use today, despite the availability of newer alternatives. It differs especially in terms of the interface used to transfer data from the print program to the form.

SmartForms, the successor to SAPscript, are created and maintained using transaction SMARTFORMS. The graphical Form Builder simplifies the creation of forms. Defined interfaces are available and SmartForms is well-suited for mass printing.

SAP Interactive Forms by Adobe, the most recent form technology, uses interactive PDF-based forms. Adobe Interactive Forms allow users to fill out forms directly on the screen and save the input data in XML format within the form. Once the PDF form is received, the SAP system extracts the stored data for further processing.
